Dontas makes Championship points charge in top ten Perth finish
Monday 11th May 2015
The successful weekend for Just Car Insurance Racing began from the outset in practice one with Dontas recording the seventh quickest time at 1:07.967, just 0.3 seconds from first. The second session saw Craig setting his fastest lap late in the session to place him in tenth, ahead of a two-stage qualifying session. A 1:06.960 in the twelve minute qualifying for all cars placed Dontas in sixth, progressing him to the five minute session for the top ten drivers only. Setting his quickest time on lap one of four in the session, but electing to save his second green set of tyres, handed Craig tenth for the start of race one with a 1:07.549.
Race one saw the Just Car Insurance Racing pilot become involved in an unfortunate minor incident on track which shuffled him back to 12th by lap two. Recovering from that, Dontas managed to maintain a consistent string of lap times across the 14 lap event, placing him in 12th by race end. After sitting eleventh on the completion of lap one in race two, Craig gradually picked his way up the order, moving to tenth on lap eight before rising to ninth on lap eleven which is where he would remain to the end. The third and final race of the weekend saw Dontas enthralled in an epic battle, with a blanket covering the top ten cars for most of the race. Positions changed many times throughout the race with Dontas as high as seventh before being shuffled back to ninth on the final lap. Over all it was a strong top ten round result. The South Australian is now sitting eleventh in the Championship after rising eight places from the start of the weekend.
“Our weekend started strongly, being inside the top ten in both practice sessions and that gave us a lot of good data to work from in order to develop the car further for qualifying. I was very happy to finish the first qualifying session in sixth which progressed us through to the top ten shootout and to be starting the first race from inside the top ten was, in all, a successful result. We played the tyre strategy well, keeping some greens up our sleeve for the races.”
“It was disappointing with how race one ended, finishing 12th after getting tangled up in some mess on track. I was focussed on recovering from that straight away as track position here in Perth is critical and we managed to achieve that. Finishing ninth in race two and three were pleasing results. Our potential in race three was great, yes we finished ninth but we were in the mix and it was just that laps ran out for us as I believe our car was getting stronger and stronger. The result also moved the Just Car Insurance Racing Holden V8 Ute into eleventh in the Championship standings after coming into the weekend in 19th.”
“Overall I was very happy with our pace across the weekend, we are really starting to make good progress and the whole crew at Erebus Motorsport are working very well together. I’m really looking forward to Darwin as I feel as though a podium result isn’t far away.”
Round three of the 2015 East Coast Bullbars Australian V8 Ute Racing Series takes place at the Skycity Triple Crown, Hidden Valley, Darwin, NT from June 19-21 with all races to be televised LIVE on FOX Sports.
