Don't be put off when buying a modified car
Recently, one of the guys I work with was telling us about a time a few years ago when he went to buy a modified Nissan 180sx and the dealer said to him that he “probably wouldn’t” be able to get his car insured due to all the modifications it had.
Discouraged by this, my workmate didn’t go on to buy the car at the time, thinking that the dealer must have known what he was talking about. Later on, when he got a job here at Just Car, he learned more about what we cover, and what we don’t, under our insurance policies. He realised that the dealer had given him the wrong information and that he could have bought that car back then and easily insured it with us.
While dealers can of course be a great wealth of knowledge, it pays to do some of your own research to see what’s covered and what’s not.
When buying a performance or modified car, it’s always best to check with your insurance company first to see whether or not they’ll insure that particular make and model of car and also whether they’ll cover all of the modifications that are fitted to the car.
Whether you’re into show cars with body kits, paintwork, stereos and aftermarket wheels, or performance cars with upgraded turbos, intercoolers, exhausts and suspension work, it pays to do your research before buying and insuring a modified car.
At Just Car, the general rule is that we will cover an unlimited amount of modifications made to your car, as long as they are all legal and the car is road worthy.
If you have a particular car in mind, it’s best to contact us and get an insurance quote. It’s important to remember that there are some modifications that even we won’t insure so it’s a good idea to know what will be covered, before you decide to hand over your hard earned cash.
There are two easy ways to get an insurance quote from us. You can pick up the phone and call us – and we can happily talk about cars all day – otherwise you can jump online and get a quote in a few minutes.
If you are looking to buy your dream car, don’t be put off if you think that the car can’t be covered, or will be too expensive to cover. At Just Car we love cars too. We want you to be safe and protected, knowing that you have the insurance you need for the ride of your choice.
Because I work for Just Car, here’s the legal bit I need to tell you about – Just Car Insurance Agency Pty Ltd (Just Car) is an authorised representative of Australian Associated Motor Insurers Ltd (AAMI – AFSL 238173), who is the issuer of the insurance.
